Natural Decaffeination
Before coffee beans are roasted, at the green bean stage, caffeine is removed.
There are three main decaffeination methods used today. The oldest and least-healthy
method uses solvents to dissolve the caffeine. Another method uses water
to dissolve the caffeine but causes the beans to loose their flavor, resulting
in a "watered-down" taste.
Recently, a process using carbon dioxide under high pressure was developed. This is the most selective, natural method yielding the highest results. Unfortunately, the method was cost-prohibitive in the US.
Enter Maximus.
As an industry leader, Maximus values innovation and new technology and saw the advantage of providing a natural, chemical-free alternative early on. The Maximus plant in Houston, Texas is now the largest chemical-free decaffeination facility in North America. At rates previously unseen in the US, Maximus provides 100%, chemical-free natural decaffeination using only ultra-pure water and supercritical carbon dioxide.
